Isafjordur Airport is probably as remote as you can get in Iceland and located on the Westfjords Peninsula. The small airport, located close to the equally small town has just a flight from Reykjavik.

Major Destinations Served by the Airport
There’s only one destination; Reykjavik, and this is unlikely to change. The plane is sometimes the only means of access in the winter if the roads close although the island ring road is almost always open but it means a very long journey from the capital.

Onward Journey From the Airport
With land being suitable only for basic grazing, the airport was built almost as close as was possible to the town and so getting into Isafjordur is easy enough. Three roads radiate from the town; to Reykjavik over the moor, route 61 to Holmavik and Hrutafjordur, along the eastern coast of the peninsular and route 60 which is a spur off the island ring road.

Driving Conditions
In winter, unless you’ve got snow chains or winter tyres you’re likely to end up in trouble. The remoteness of the settlement means that few venture out without 4 x 4 traction and chains. Plane will be your only exit in bad weather and even then you may encounter long delays.

Places to Stay
The only hotel in the town is the Edda which has yet to receive a tourist board rating but which looks very nice and is comfortable as well as convenient for the town. Elsewhere you’re better off looking out for the many bed and breakfast options in the town which supplement the local income.

• Travel to Reykjavik by car in the summer only, over the wilderness that is Thorskafjardarheidi Moor. You’ll rarely encounter anywhere so barren and bleak but that’s part of its beauty.
• Take the Baldur Ferry to Stikkisholmur and on the way you’ll catch sight of the majestic Dynjandi Waterfall.
• Catch the local ferry to the small island of Vigur and get even further away from it all!
• Have a leisurely meander around the fishing museum and discover the harsh reality of Icelandic fishing.
