Reykjavik is a great base for your stay in Iceland but to get a true feel for the country it’s necessary to head out of the city and see some of the smaller settlements and of course the wild countryside.

Getting to Reykjavik

The city is served by two airports; Reykjavik Domestic Airport and Keflavik International Airport. The international one is some distance from the city and involves an hour’s journey by road, possible by expensive taxi or the unreliable bus transfer. Instead consider hiring a car to make the easy drive yourself.

Getting out of the City
There are two main ways to see life outside the city. Either you can take one of the ferries to the islands in the fjord or a boat trip out to see the whales or you can hire a car and travel around the island’s ring road to see what it’s all about.

Places to stay range from the luxurious but very expensive CenterHotel Thingholt at over three hundred euros a night to the highly regarded Hotel Gardur at a tenth of the price! Apartment holidays are popular in the city but you’ll find few guesthouses which are common elsewhere on the island.

Must See Places in Reykjavik

• The old town is popular with all. It has a multitude of brightly coloured houses built in the traditional Icelandic manner and is worth a couple of hours of your time.
• Tjornin Park is a very relaxing place to visit with a pond where children and adults alike can feed the ducks and more serious bird watchers can follow the paths into the marshland at one end of the park to see hardy species.
• Get away from it all on Videy, an island in the fjord. Reachable only by ferry from Sundahofn, the island is uninhabited but has a small café which is open in the summer months. Grab a coffee and just sit and enjoy the tranquillity.
• The many museums and art galleries in the city. You’ll stumble across them at almost every turn.
